A Credit Union is a cooperative financial institution, owned and controlled by the people who use its services. These people are members. Credit Unions serve groups that share something in common, such as where they work, live, or go to church. Credit Unions are not-for-profit, and exist to provide a safe, convenient place for members to save money and to get loans at reasonable rates.
Well, if you are not a bank, what are you? We provide the same services as a bank with a cooperative spirit. A Credit Union is not-for-profit; we exist only to serve our members. As a result, we are able to pay high dividends on saving and offer low rates on loans.
How are you different from a bank?As a member you are an owner. The banks are owned by stockholders, each member of a Credit Union is a shareholder.
Why should I care? When you do business with your Credit Union, you are helping the cooperative. This enables your Credit Union to give more back to you in the form of convenient locations, competitive rates on deposits and loans. Ultimately, the more business you give your Credit Union, the more you will receive.
